What is Your Blog’s Authority? At Technorati They Know

The Technorati index, claiming to list more than 75 million blogs (as counted in April 2007), launched a brand new feature on May 4th aˆ“ the Authority number. The underlying idea is simple - this addition comes to replace the old Technorati’s references - “N blogs link here” and ‘X links from Y blogs” with a single Technorati Authority number.

Authority

Technorati’s Authority is indeed a very handy tool aˆ“ it shows the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months’ period. The higher the number of linking blogs goes, the more Technorati Authority the linked blog gets. What is noteworthy to point out here is that Authority counts in the number of blogs linking to some website not the number of links. In two words: even if a blog is linking to your blog more than once, you still get only one point of Authority added to your number. Each new link value is added to your Authority number for 180 days starting the count from the day the link was placed, which actually means to keep a high authority a blog is expected to be constantly linked - if not, with the 6 months passing by and no fresh links added, no traces will be left of the previously high authority number. However, the good news here is that you can see these blogs that have linked to you and work on those who yet haven’t had the pleasure to give you their link.

The Authority tool also makes it possible to list the Technorati Top 100, based on the Authority numbers each blog gets, which turns out to be a great bet since you can see how your blogs is working, how much inbound links it is getting and what is more aˆ“ see how the others in your niche are doing. (Getting to know where your rivals get their links is so nice to know, isn’t it?) Moreover, if you wish to show your blog visitors (and rivals) how proud you are of your Authority number, the Technorati Authority Widget is easy to set up.

The whole idea of the Authority count has been largely discussed for the past week with one reasonable question popping up aˆ“ is the Authority number speaking about authority and not measuring popularity instead? Whatever the answer, still, the Authority number appears to be one more way to search for those interesting and useful blogs - time will show if the function is to serve its purpose right.
