Blogging! What makes people blog? And, most importantly, what makes people comment on these blogs? Some would say the content, others would mention something else.
You know that there are a lot of rankings and statistics of blogs on the web with regards to their page rank, inbound links, monthly visitors, alexa ranking and so forth. I still haven’t seen a ranking or statistics disclosing information on the most commented blog posts. What are the top ones? Well, I am about to give you a small compilation of mine with the top five most commented posts. I realize that this is not the real deal for sure, because there are loads of blogs out there and it is practically impossible to check all of them. Anyway, here goes:
Number 1
The most commented topic I have stumbled so far is one that was posted on Engadget. The topic received the outstanding 25 451 comments. The simple explanation for that is the Engadget giveaways! They were giving away lots of prizes, and to enter, you had to leave a comment. The response was pretty awesome as you can see. With all those comments, four more with more than 10,000 comments, 6 posts with more than 5,000 comments, and 21 posts with more than 1,000 comments. This means that while Engadget and the industry in general are posting more news and products about cell phones and portable audio, Engadget readers are more interested in gaming and informative feature posts.
Number 2
Zach Braff’s Garden State blog and his post “Blog unto Others…“collected 3622 comments. The case here is completely different from the above mentioned post. The tone of this post is completely personal and it is addressed directly to the visitors. The blog author feels for them and is really compassionate about the things that are being said there. He participates in the blog like he is a part of the mob. This has always worked when trying to make people feel that their message is heard which reflects in the number of comments as we observe.
Number 3
Blogcritics got 3440 comments for its post about Pretty Ricky. Now, before I saw the post I knew nothing about this Pretty Ricky guy and I was curious to find what was written in there. The moment I read it, the picture was way more clear than before. It is all about music, and an urban boy band. Wait! There’s more. When we talk about that we have to mention the provocative language that this topic involves. Words like racism, sex and so on have always provoked people’s interest. The author here puts on the stake rap music and dissects it without sparing the bad words about it which resulted into a flood of angry and aggravated people commenting that. The hint here is that, provocative and controversial topics are always doomed to succeed.
Number 4
“The Kevin Alexander Clark’s got a web site” post that has 3,389 comments. Back then when it was posted the idea of urging people to use a blog as a social network was a brilliant idea! Kids who are big fans of “The School of Rock” movie used the comments area on this “School of Rock” super fan weblog like a group chat area, asking each other if they are online.
Number 5
MetaFilter and its “metafilter parody. no comment from me, i’ll leave that to everyone else.” received 1729 comments. How? I mean, do you need the answer already? I think that the title of the post says it all. Really clever. Again we see that when people create a strong community effect on their blogs the benefits are not far away.
These are some of the most commented blogs and posts on the web. There are many out there I guess. Maybe there are even topics with more comments. Who knows? Can anyone find any other contenders? Digg? Huffington Post? Maybe forums?
